Poori with Choley / Channa curry / Chick peas curry

Poori with Choley / Channa curry / Chick peas curry

Ok. One more useful item in my pantry is canned chick peas and MTR Channa masala. I always have a stock of them, so that if I ever have the need for them, I have them ready. Chick peas are healthy and vegetarian. Canned chick peas are already cooked, so all the preparation of soaking them and pressure cooking is cut out. This curry also can be made in a jiffy.
Once a week atleast I try to make something out of whole wheat flour, so that the kids can enjoy something other than regular food. Ya these come into the different food category for them, soooo ABCD....and who doesn't enjoy chapathi, roti or poori on a cold winter night.
The masala powders main ingredients are coriander - cumin powder, amchur powder and garam masala powder. So if you dont have the ready made powder and have these, you can use them. Amchur is really good because it imparts the tangy sour flavor. You can use it in moderation to your taste level. Amchur powder is nothing but dried mango powder. I use a little bit extra of the amchur in addition to the masala powder, cos I like it :)
There are two ways I make this curry. One way is by grinding a few chick peas to get the extra thick gravy or by just adding the yogurt to get the gravy. This is the latter kind. This is one other item which my kids love. I keep the spice level little low so that they can enjoy it too. They love pooris and I like them too :)

Poori Ingredients:

2 cups of whole wheat atta / flour
1 tbsp of oil
a pinch of salt
enough warm water to knead it into a soft dough
oil for frying

Method:

Add all the ingredients together with just enough warm water and knead it into a soft dough. I sometimes add yogurt to the mix before adding water to make it healthy. If adding yogurt, you need to adjust the amount to water you are using. The dough should be soft and not hard.
Keep the dough aside, covered for atleast 15-20 min. before making the pooris.
Make small pieces of the dough and roll them out to about the size of your palm. Deep fry in oil to golden brown and remove onto a paper napkin to drain out the excess oil. Serve HOT.

Choley / Channa curry / Chick peas curry

Ingredients:

1 1lb can of chick peas
1 large or 2 medium to small onions
3-4 green chillies
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1 large chopped tomato
1/2 cup yogurt
1 tbsp MTR channa masala powder ( add more if you feel its less)
1/2 tbsp amchur powder (optional)
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1-2 tbsp oil
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves

Method:

Open the can and drain the water in which the chick peas are soaked in and wash the chick peas in a colander. In a pot, heat oil and add the onions. Add the green chillies. When the onions are cooked, translucent and are turning brown, add ginger - garlic paste and cook it for a minute or so. Add the chopped tomato and cook for another couple of minutes before adding the chick peas. Now add the chick peas, masala powder, salt, turmeric powder, chilli powder and the extra amchur powder. At this point you can go either 2 ways. One, take some ( 1/2 cup or so) of the chick peas, grind them a little, not to a smooth paste, and add it back to the pot. The other way is you can just keep cooking and no grinding. Add the yogurt and cook more till it becomes thick and gravy like. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot it with poori, chapathi, roti, bature or rice . Enjoy!!! :)

This is going to Pari from Foodelicious's  'The Combo Event'. Enjoy!!! :)
